Nigel Baptiste's successor has now been named twice.

What did Republic announce in January?

It named Richard Sammy to two offices.

Republic Financial Holdings published a notice on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange website on 30 January 2026. As quoted in the Trinidad press, it read:

"We advise of the appointment of Mr Richard Sammy as group president and chief executive office [sic] of Republic Financial Holdings Ltd and president and managing director of Republic Bank Ltd with effect from January 1, 2027."

Sammy was named to succeed Nigel Baptiste, the incumbent Group President and Chief Executive.

What happened in October?

Sammy left the group, and Karen Yip Chuck was named in his place.

Richard S. Sammy departed the group on 14 October 2026, after 18 years, about two and a half months before he was due to take the post the January notice had given him.

Karen Yip Chuck was named Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Republic Financial Holdings and President and Managing Director of Republic Bank Limited, subject to regulatory approval.

Without the January notice on the record, October is a bank naming a chief executive.

Who is Karen Yip Chuck?

An insider of more than 30 years, Group Vice President since November 2022.

Yip Chuck's appointment is subject to regulatory approval, which is an ordinary condition for a bank holding company.

What reason did Republic give?

None.

The company did not explain why its board changed course. Nothing in the October announcement addresses the January notice, and no cause is attached to Sammy's departure.

One report said the bank was expected to describe the departure as mutual. No such statement from Republic has been issued.

Why does a Trinidadian succession matter across the region?

Because Republic is a regional banking group, and the chair being filled is the group's.

The offices named in both notices are the group's, not one country's. Republic Financial Holdings operates subsidiaries across the Caribbean, so the person in that chair sets credit, correspondent and risk policy for customers well beyond Trinidad.

Where regional banks sit in the correspondent-banking system, and what one United States regulator found when it examined the standard those relationships are held to, was examined in There Is One Correspondent Banking Rule.

Is there a pattern in what Republic publishes?

Twice this year the outcome has been on the record and the reasoning has not.

In August the Court of Appeal in Trinidad and Tobago held that Republic Bank had exercised reasonable care over the 2022 break-in at its Couva branch, overturning a first-instance finding of negligence and awarding costs against the customer. The court's reasons were not published, reported in Court of Appeal Clears Republic Bank Over the Couva Vault Break-In.

The court withheld its reasons in August. Republic has withheld its own in October. Different institutions, and a customer or shareholder looking for the reasoning finds none in either.

What are a listed company's obligations here?

Republic disclosed both appointments.

Caribbean exchanges carry continuous disclosure requirements, and on some measures they are stricter than the United States, examined in SEC's Semi-Annual Reporting Plan: Caribbean Exchanges Already Stricter. Those requirements govern the reporting of a material change. They do not require an explanation of one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Republic Financial Holdings announce in January 2026?

A notice published on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange website on 30 January 2026 advised the appointment of Richard Sammy as Group President and Chief Executive of Republic Financial Holdings and President and Managing Director of Republic Bank Limited, with effect from 1 January 2027.

What changed in October 2026?

Sammy departed the group on 14 October 2026 after 18 years, about two and a half months before he was due to take the post. Karen Yip Chuck was named to the same two offices from the same effective date of 1 January 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

Why is this described as a reversal?

Because both announcements name the same two offices and the same start date, and they name different people. The January notice is what makes the October one a change of course rather than an ordinary appointment.

What reason did the company give?

None. Republic did not explain why its board changed course, and no cause is attached to Sammy's departure. A description of the departure as mutual was reported as expected rather than issued, and is not quoted here.

Who is Karen Yip Chuck?

An executive with more than 30 years at the Republic group, Group Vice President since November 2022, whose appointment is subject to regulatory approval.

Does this affect banking outside Trinidad and Tobago?

The offices named are the group's rather than one country's, and Republic Financial Holdings operates subsidiaries across the Caribbean, so the appointment reaches customers beyond Trinidad.
