A second-city airport in the Dominican Republic has added three international routes for the 2026-2027 winter season. Gregorio Luperon International Airport in Puerto Plata, operated by Aerodom under Vinci Airports, will receive direct flights from Bogota, Montreal and Toronto, Aviacionline reported.
Colombia's Wingo starts Bogota to Puerto Plata on 6 October 2026, twice a week, running to 25 January 2027, for roughly 8,900 seats across the season. Canada's Flair Airlines adds Puerto Plata to its network for the first time, from Montreal on 18 December and Toronto on 19 December, each up to twice weekly, Dominican Today reported.

El Dinero reported the announcement as part of a continuing effort by Aerodom and Vinci to lift traffic through Puerto Plata rather than through Punta Cana or Santo Domingo.
Why does a second city get its own long-haul routes?
Because an airport operator with a concession has a commercial reason to fill the airports it holds, not only the busiest one. Aerodom operates a group of Dominican airports under a single concession, which gives it both the incentive and the counterparty standing to negotiate with carriers on behalf of a smaller field.
The carriers involved are low-cost operators. Wingo is Copa Holdings' low-cost arm, and Flair is a Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier. Neither is placing a wide-body on the route. Two flights a week is a season, not a commitment.
What does this mean for Guyana?
On the Canadian leg, Guyana is ahead. Caribbean Airlines began daily non-stop Georgetown to Toronto service on 1 July 2026, flight BW616 out at 9:20 in the morning and BW617 back from Toronto at 4:50 in the afternoon, operated with Air Transat over a flight time of six hours and fifty minutes. Puerto Plata is getting two flights a week to each Canadian city. Georgetown gets seven.
The Bogota route is the one with no Guyanese equivalent. Guyana sits on the South American mainland and its scheduled network runs north and west, through Trinidad, Barbados, Miami, New York and now Toronto, rather than across the continent it is part of.
Regional air access has moved in several places this month.
