**Quick summary:** The Guyana Oil Company raised pump prices on Saturday, gasoline from G$228 to G$258 a litre and diesel from G$278 to G$318\. The diesel rise is 14.4 per cent. It is the second increase at the state company this year, after 12 per cent in March.

By LCN Business Desk

The state-owned Guyana Oil Company increased fuel prices by as much as 13 per cent on Saturday, [Kaieteur News](https://kaieteurnewsonline.com/2026/09/27/fuel-prices-jump-13-at-guyoil/?ref=lacaribenanews.com) reported, with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz still holding tankers out of the market. Gasoline moved from G$228 to G$258 a litre. Diesel moved from G$278 to G$318.

## What are the pump prices now?

Three retailers, three positions on the same day. Guyoil moved first and moved furthest; one competitor had not moved at all by Saturday afternoon.

| Retailer | Gasoline, G$ a litre | Diesel, G$ a litre |
| ----------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------ |
| Guyoil, before Saturday | 228 | 278 |
| Guyoil, after Saturday | 258 | 318 |
| Mobil | 265 | 297 |
| Rubis | 260 | 290 |

Read down the diesel column and the state company is now the dearest of the three, at G$318 against G$297 and G$290\. Read across the Guyoil row and diesel rose 14.4 per cent while gasoline rose 13.2 per cent, so the headline 13 per cent understates what a haulier, a miner or a generator owner pays. That position has since been set [against the rest of the region](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/caribbean-fuel-prices-bahamas-bvi-price-controls-cost-guatemala-2026/): petrol is going to US$7.50 a gallon in The Bahamas and sells at US$5.15 in the British Virgin Islands.

## Why is diesel the sharper move?

Because diesel is the tighter barrel everywhere, not only here. This newspaper set out the position three days ago in [America May Stop Selling Diesel Abroad](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/us-diesel-export-ban-brazil-latin-america-guyana-fuel-2026/): Guyana bought US$632 million of mineral fuels from the United States in 2025 against US$98 million from Trinidad and Tobago, and produces crude it cannot refine, so it sells barrels and buys back the middle distillate.

The supply shock is the one already on this record. Tankers have been blocked from transiting the Strait of Hormuz since the closure, and the exposure was flagged here in April, in [Iran Threatens Red Sea Shipping as Guyana's Oil Windfall Strains Fuel Supply](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/iran-threatens-red-sea-shipping-as-guyanas-oil-windfall-strains-fuel-supply/).

## What has the region done about the same shock?

Two things, and both are fiscal rather than physical. Guatemala suspended value added tax and the petroleum products tax on fuel until 31 December, cutting diesel by an estimated 83 US cents a gallon, reported in [Guatemala Stopped Taxing Fuel Until New Year's Eve](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/guatemala-fuel-tax-exoneration-decree-22-2026-diesel-2026/). Earlier it capped the pump price outright after truckers sealed the Mexico and El Salvador routes, in [Guatemala Caps Fuel at Q39 a Gallon](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/guatemala-fuel-price-cap-trucker-blockades-2026/).

Guyana has done neither. The state company has instead absorbed and then passed on, which is a third option and the one that shows up at the pump rather than in the accounts.

## Why would a state company be the dearest?

Because it has been told to stop losing money. President Irfaan Ali said at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry's 136th annual general meeting that Guyoil was operating at a deficit and would need at least to break even to help stabilise the market, Kaieteur News reported. A company pricing to break even after a period of deficit will move before a competitor pricing off its own landed cost.

The knock-on is electricity. Diesel is what runs the generation the grid still leans on, and the grid has been fragile all month, set out in [Georgetown Went Dark Again](https://www.lacaribenanews.com/gpl-blackout-news-conferences-interenergy-2026/). A 14.4 per cent diesel rise raises the cost of every unit generated that way.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much did fuel prices rise at Guyoil?

Gasoline rose from G$228 to G$258 a litre, a rise of 13.2 per cent, and diesel from G$278 to G$318 a litre, a rise of 14.4 per cent. The increase took effect on Saturday.

Are the private stations cheaper?

On diesel, yes. Mobil was retailing diesel at G$297 a litre and Rubis at G$290, against Guyoil's G$318\. On gasoline Mobil was at G$265 and Rubis at G$260, against Guyoil's G$258, so Guyoil remained marginally cheaper on gasoline.

Why are prices rising?

Global supply. Tankers have been blocked from transiting the Strait of Hormuz since its closure during the war against Iran, and oil and gas facilities have been bombed. Guyana produces crude but does not refine it, so it imports its gasoline and diesel.

When was the last increase?

March this year, when Guyoil prices climbed by 12 per cent.
